Taylor Swift makes music history as IFPI’s Biggest-Selling Global Recording Artist of the Year for the fifth time

Taylor also tops Global Album Chart, Global Vinyl Album Chart, Global Streaming Album Chart and Global Album Sales Chart with her 2024 release THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT

18th February 2025 – Taylor Swift has been confirmed by IFPI, the organisation that represents the recorded music industry worldwide, as the Global Recording Artist of the Year 2024.

This is the 5th time that Taylor Swift has won the award – and the third consecutive year. In a record-breaking year across the board for the pop superstar, 2024 has also seen her scoop up four other major IFPI awards. This includes the Global Album Chart, Global Vinyl Album Chart, Global Streaming Album Chart and Global Album Sales Chart thanks to the huge success of her eleventh studio album THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT, which was released in April 2024.

Record-breaking Taylor Swift |The Eras Tour boosted fan engagement with her entire catalogue on streaming platforms around the world.

This phenomenon was demonstrated by the resurgence of her previous albums 1989 (Taylor’s Version) (2023), Midnights (2022), folklore (2020), evermore (2020) and Lover (2019), which all landed in the Top 20 of IFPI’s 2024 Global Vinyl Album Chart – an incredible testament to Taylor’s fandom and the enduring popularity of her catalogue so far.

This marks the 12th year of the IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year Award, with Taylor Swift having taken the top spot of the chart more than any other artist during that time (this year’s win follows successes in 2014, 2019, 2022 and 2023).

Victoria Oakley, CEO, IFPI, said: “We are immensely proud to award the IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year Award to Taylor Swift for the fifth time, as she continues to redefine the limits of global success.

“This has been a huge year for Taylor, and it has been incredible to see the extent to which fans all over the world are connecting with her superb catalogue of music.”

It was also an incredible year for breakthrough artists across the IFPI Global Charts. Zach Bryan and Sabrina Carpenter made their first appearance in the Top 10 of the Global Recording Artist Chart whilst in the Global Streaming Album Chart, Noah Kahan, Benson Boone, Chappell Roan and Teddy Swims all featured for the first time.

Elsewhere, the various global album charts demonstrated the growing popularity of the country genre, reflected in chart appearances for Morgan Wallen, Beyoncé, Post Malone and Zach Bryan.

In the Global Album Sales Chart, based on unit sales across physical and download formats, K-Pop continued to be the leading genre. Elsewhere in Asia, Chinese artist Zhou Shen’s shenself reached #11 while Japanese act Snow Man reached #17 with their album RAYS.

The Global Vinyl Album Chart was a fascinating snapshot of the shifting demographics of vinyl fans, continuing a trend towards newly released albums and frontline artists, who skew significantly female and features the likes of Billie Eilish’s HIT ME HARD AND SOFT, Chappell Roan’s The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess and Charli XCX’s BRAT.

About the IFPI Global Charts

The Global Recording Artist of the Year Award is calculated according to an artist’s or group’s worldwide sales across streaming, download and physical music formats during the calendar year and covers their entire body of work.

IFPI’s Global Charts provide the most complete picture of artist, album and track performance worldwide. The Charts capture streaming, downloads and physical formats in every country directly from the participating record labels, which is then converted using IFPI’s unique methodology to a single, global chart figure. The methodology, developed in partnership with IFPI’s member record labels, reflects global commercial success by combining the most exhaustive reporting of unit sales and streams with the country-level economics of each consumption type.

IFPI will release the results of the IFPI Global Single Chart and the winner of the IFPI Global Single Award for 2024 later this week.
